Two men take action after elderly man drives into river

KENOSHA -- The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to the 18600 block of State Highway 142 around 2:18 p.m. after a car drove into the Des Plaines River.

Officials say a 90-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on State Highway 142 and failed to negotiate the curve at the Des Plaines River Bridge. The car struck a portion of the bridge, and drove into the river, becoming fully submerged.

Officials say two men from Chicago saw the car go into the water, and jumped into action. They got the elderly driver out of the car as the water rose up to the man's chin.

The driver was transported to St. Catherine's Hospital in Kenosha, and is believed to have only minor injuries. The man is from Newport, Rhode Island, but is moving to Burlington, Wisconsin.

Officials say the cause of the accident is unknown, and their investigation is ongoing. A towing firm will remove the vehicle from the water.
