Seven men and child rescued from ice on bay of Green Bay

LITTLE SUAMICO, Wis. (AP) -- Sheriff's officials have rescued seven men and a 3-year-old child stranded on the bay of Green Bay bcause of a large crack in the ice.

Monday's midday rescue happened about a mile off shore in Little Suamico. The Oconto County sheriff's department received a call just before 11 a.m. from a person on shore concerned about fishermen on the ice.

Jim Friedman was one of those fishermen. Friedman says he was stationary, but the ice under him wasn't. Friedman says the anglers knew something was wrong, so they headed for shore "but it was already open.''

Oconto County asked for help from Brown County and its new airboat to get to the stranded fishermen. By 1 p.m. those stranded were taken off the ice in two airboat trips.
