Many struggling with emotions after tragic Campbellsport crash

CAMPBELLSPORT -- Funerals will take place later this week for three teenage girls killed in a crash in Campbellsport over the weekend. There will be a visitation for the girls Thursday in the Campbellsport High School gymnasium.

According to the girls' obituaries, Caitlin Scannel donated her tissues for transplant purposes, and Katie Berg left behind her heart for a nine-year-old boy.

The Campbellsport community remains shaken after the horrific weekend crash that killed three Campbellsport High School girls, and left six others injured. Memorials are set up at the crash scene, and it's clear the pain won't go away easily for those who knew the victims.

For emergency crews first on the scene Saturday morning in the small town, there were images that won't easily go away. The Fond du Lac Fire Department sent two ambulances to the scene. "Oftentimes no matter what we do, all the tools in our toolbox aren't enough to save someone's life. It's difficult because we often question ourselves and ask 'is there anything more I could have done? In a community that size, you wish you could have gone ten times further than your ability allowed you to,"

For those first on the scene of an accident that left three young girls dead, there is much to overcome. "You may see people you have to actually walk away from, and part of looking at the greater good of everyone at the scene is realizing when you have to stop - when an individual is beyond your capability, and you have to walk away, and that can be very difficult for responders,"

Saturday's tragedy hits home for Kayla Waldschmidt. She went to Campbellsport High School, and remembers friends who were killed in crashes when she was a student there. Now, Waldschmidt is a grief counselor at Horizon's Grief Resource Center. "Campbellsport is a very closknit community. Everybody knows everybody else, so the support is really generated from within, and they're going to take care of each other and support each other," Waldschmidt said.

Campbellsport EMS, Fond du Lac and other first responders had a group debriefing to talk about the incident, and their emotions. For them, group discussion is important, but so is knowing professional counseling is always available.
