Monday is Tanzania Day in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE -- Monday, February 20th is President's Day, but it's also Tanzania Day in Milwaukee!

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett declared Monday the unofficial holiday, because the Tanzanian ambassador is in town. The ambassador was in Milwaukee to present investment and trade opportunities to help improve the country.

In 2007, the "Hope in Tanzania Foundation" helped establish a sister-city relationship, which created a formal tie between Wisconsin and Tanzania.

"There's a lot of poverty in Tanzania, but there's a lot of potential there for commercial growth. (The ambassador) wants us to know that Tanzania should be on our radar screen. This is a place where we should consider doing business and creating more wealth to help people in that community, that country," Mayor Barrett said Monday.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Tanzania's independence.
