Deadline to apply to be a Milwaukee Fire Cadet nears

MILWAUKEE -- The application deadline for the Milwaukee Fire Department's Fire Cadet Program is Friday, February 24th.

Applications delivered in-person to the Fire & Police Commission office are due by 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Online applications must be successfully submitted by 11:59 p.m. that same day. Persons mailing their applications must have them postmarked on February 24.

The Fire Cadet Program has been completely revamped to better focus on the education of firefighters. Fire Cadets will gain certification as a Level I Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) from the Milwaukee Fire Department (MFD). They will also be required to continue their education by taking 12 college credits per year at a school of their choice. Fire Cadets will have the opportunity to work throughout the various MFD bureaus learning about the many aspects of the department. Fire Cadets will have to successfully complete a minimum of two years in the program to be considered for a Fire Recruit class.

To qualify as an applicant, students must be 17-19 years old, graduate from high school with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher, and be a US citizen or be authorized to work in the United Sates. The testing process begins with a written exam, then moves on to a physical agility test and interviews. Prior to being hired, applicants will be subject to a background investigation and be required to pass a medical examination.

The Fire and Police Commission office is located at City Hall, room 706.
