GAB needs more time to complete recall signature review

MADISON (AP) -- State election officials say they'll probably need more time to complete their recall signature review.

Democrats have turned nearly 2 million signatures against Gov. Scott Walker and five other Republicans. The state Government Accountability Board has until March 19 to determine whether enough valid signatures exist to trigger elections. If so, the board would have to schedule the elections for the sixth Tuesday after March 19.

Now, GAB Director Kevin Kennedy says the board anticipates asking a judge for a deadline extension. It's unclear how much more time the board wants. The body plans to discuss the matter at a March 12 meeting.

The board wants to avoid scheduling recall elections in April because clerks will be busy with the regular spring election that month.
