Committee okays proposal to extend Lake Parkway into Oak Creek

MILWAUKEE -- The Lake Parkway Extension Study Advisory Committee unanimously okayed a proposal Tuesday to extend the Lake Parkway (I-794) to Highway 100 in Oak Creek.

Right now, the Lake Parkway ends just south of Layton Ave. near Milwaukee's Mitchell International Airport.

In a news release issued Tuesday afternoon, Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik said, "I thank my colleagues on the Committee for embracing this concept. My vision for the Lake Parkway goes even further, hopefully connecting the Hoan Bridge to the Illinois state line."

More than 200 residents attended a February 29, 2012, public hearing hosted by Milwaukee County Supervisor Patricia Jursik. The public also submitted comments during a 30-day public comment period that ended March 15, 2012. Those comments show roughly 70% of respondents expressed support for a Lake Parkway extension.

Supervisor Jursik said her office will now begin preparing a resolution for the County Board to adopt an amendment to the 2035 Regional Transportation Plan developed by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission. That's a step that must be completed before engineering can begin on the Lake Parkway extension.
