Racine alderman accused of battery against wife

RACINE (AP) -- A Racine alderman is facing misdemeanor charges of battery and disorderly conduct.

Alderman Eric Marcus is accused of waking up his wife early March 28, grabbing both her arms and shaking her violently.

According to the complaint filed Tuesday, a Racine County Sheriff's deputy later observed bruises on both Theresa Marcus' left arm and right biceps.

Eric Marcus denied he ever committed battery against anyone in his entire life.

Online court records show the couple filed for divorce Feb. 6.

Marcus was defeated by Krystyna Sarrazin in Tuesday's election.

Sheriff Chris Schmaling said the timing of the charges was unfortunate given the election, but investigators don't pay attention to such matters.

Marcus has an initial appearance scheduled for April 17.
