Consumer Reports rates local, national supermarkets

MILWAUKEE -- Consumer Reports recently rated a number of local and national supermarkets with its subscribers.

Pick 'N Save rated average, according to the consumer magazine. The Roundy's chain got middle-of-the-road reviews when it comes to selection, freshness of perishable items and service, and slightly above-average when it comes to cleanliness.

Walmart saw low marks for cleanliness, quality of perishables and east of checkout, but got extremely high ratings for its low pricing.

Sam's Club, owned by Walmart, actually performed better than its parent store in all categories.

Costco came in with very high ratings in price and quality, but rated low in service, though Consumer Reports notes service isn't necessarily a high priority at a warehouse-type store.

To get the most out of your supermarket experience, Consumer Reports suggests you thumb through your stores' weekly fliers, and note all discounts. Also - use the stores' bonus or loyalty cards. The best deals are reserved for those customers. Clipping coupons could save you a little more than $1 per item on average.
