Art lovers take in five Milwaukee museums for free Sunday

MILWAUKEE -- Sunday, May 6th, people had the opportunity to visit five art museums in Milwaukee for free, for one day only! It was a rainy, gloomy Sunday afternoon, but many didn't let the weather get in the way of the opportunity to view some art for free.

Sandra Tesmer and her friend Arleen Breitzman said they weren't going to let a little rain stop them from attending Sunday afternoon's event. "We thought we would come early and beat the crowds," Tesmer said. "Though it was a nice opportunity to see some of the art and the fact that it was free was very nice," Breitzman said.

Crowds had the chance to check out the works of art at the following museums, part of the Milwaukee Museum Mile: the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum, North Point Lighthouse, Museum of Wisconsin Art at Saint John's on the Lake, Jewish Museum Milwaukee and the Charles Allis Art Museum.

Visitors say they enjoyed every minute. "There's such a wealth of arts and culture and history in each of the museums, and that's really a great thing about the Milwaukee Museum Mile. You get the history in Lake Park, the North Point Lighthouse. Plus, you get a great view of our maritime history. They have a lot of artifacts," marketing manager John Sterr said.

The Jewish Museum Milwaukee has special exhibits and a collection of artifacts. "It has the history of the Jewish art and culture, but also particular to how that community and the culture made its mark on Milwaukee. You not only learn about the culture, but you also learn a lot about the formation of Milwaukee," Sterr said.

Organizers say they may hold a free event again next year, since it was such a success.

Starting Monday, May 7th, those with a brochure can come back to any of the five participating museums and get $1 off admission.
