Five arrested after high-speed chase ends in Kenosha Co.

KENOSHA CO. -- A high-speed chase involving a white minivan started in the city of Milwaukee and ended in Kenosha County just south of Highway 50 Wednesday morning, May 9th. Five suspects were taken into custody.

Milwaukee police say the pursuit began at 9:48 a.m. after a citizen called in the description of the vehicle involved in a burglary near 51st and Good Hope. Officers called off that pursuit at 9:58 a.m. when it was determined the chase could possibly jeopardize public safety.

Moments after the chase was called off, Menomonee Falls police found the van near Woodman's and tried to pull it over. The van took off down Highway 45. Menomonee Falls police pursed the suspects until Watertown Plank Rd. That's when the Wisconsin State Patrol as well as deputies from Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha got involved.

"The vehicle passed the scale and our marked squad got behind it and at that point the vehicle sped up from 65 to over a hundred miles an hour," Mark Barlar with the Wisconsin State Patrol said.

Once in Kenosha County, Dept. of Transportation highway cameras show the left front tire on the white minivan was deflated.

"He successfully spiked the vehicle, the left front tire slowly deflated, driver felt he couldn't get away anymore and he pulled over into the median and stopped," Barlar said.

The suspects were taken into custody by the Wisconsin State Patrol. That forced the southbound lanes of I-94 to be shut down while the arrests were being made.

The southbound lanes of I-94 were reopened a short time after the van was pulled over. But traffic was quite backed up because of the incident.

FOX6 News learned the van involved in this chase was stolen from ABC Daycare at 60th and Center in Milwaukee on Tuesday, May 8th. Police were notified of the theft. The owner of the daycare says she knows the van had a full tank of gas.

The owner of ABC Daycare says this is not the first time her business has had vans stolen -- two others have been stolen in the past. The vans are equipped with security alarms. Those alarms sound until properly turned off. When the vans were found, the batteries were usually drained -- presumably because the security device was left on.

The owner says there is surveillance video of this most recent theft -- and it has been turned over to Milwaukee police. She says it appeared the camera captured three people stealing the van.

The suspects were turned over to Milwaukee police. All five of them are being housed in the Milwaukee County Jail.
