One rescued after two jet skis overturn in Lake Michigan

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Coast Guard officials say one person had to be rescued Tuesday afternoon, May 15th after two jet skis overturned south of Bradford Beach and McKinley Marina.

Coast Guard officials say it happened around 1:35 p.m.

Officials say two of the people swam to shore, and a third had to be rescued. No one was taken to the hospital.

Officials say two 19-year-old women were riding on one jet ski and stated their engine had stalled. A 34-year-old man on a jet ski attempted to help, but his jet ski also broke down. The two women used life preservers and swam to shore. The man tired while trying to bring his jet ski to shore and had to be rescued.

“People can’t treat Lake Michigan like a small, inland lake. Water is unforgiving, and we have to respect Lake Michigan and use caution. I don’t care how good a swimmer you are. The temperature of the lake is now approximately 50 degrees, and it can take less than two hours for hypothermia to set in," Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said.

Milwaukee Fire Department's Dive Team responded to the scene along with the Coast Guard.
