Some Milwaukee County homeowners receive free home repairs

MILWAUKEE -- Volunteers with tools in hand spent Saturday, May 19th giving back to the community.  They worked on Mary Alvarez's home in Milwaukee.  She's one of the people selected for free home repairs!

"We didn't expect it. I was so pleased and so happy," Alvarez said.

Rebuilding Together Greater Milwaukee is an organization that provides free home repairs and modifications for low-income homeowners and senior citizens. The group organized Saturday's event.

Alvarez's friend told her about the organization, so she called and submitted an application.

"I didn't know what we were going to do, but we got picked!" Alvarez said.

Volunteers painted rooms, put in a new toilet and sink, installed a new furnace and did landscaping.

"Allowing seniors who are paying taxes, doing it the right way, being responsible, to stay in their homes is such an added value," Milwaukee County Executive, Chris Abele said.

Rebuilding Together Greater Milwaukee does about 200 homes a year.
