MPS reviews safety procedures after child abduction

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee Public Schools is doing a review of safety procedures in the wake of a child abduction from Starms Early Childhood Center on the city's north side Thursday, May 24th.

"We're concerned that this happened. It should not have happened. We understand and are in awe of how fast something like that can occur," Roseann St. Aubin, MPS Communications Director said.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has a 33-year-old woman in custody, accused of abducting a four-year-old girl from Starms. Police say the woman entered the school and claimed that she was asked by the child’s mother to pick up the four-year-old girl. The woman then left with the child.

The two were found near 25th & North, where the child’s mother confronted the suspect and was able to get her child back.  Milwaukee police arrested the suspect.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office is expected to review the incident and make a decision on whether criminal charges will be filed.
