56-year-old Nayyer Rana killed at Broadway Petro Mart

WAUKESHA -- Police say 56-year-old Nayyer Rana died from gunshot wounds inside the Broadway Petro Mart gas station located on the corner of E. Broadway Street and Pleasant Street in Waukesha.

Police received a call at 4:19 a.m. Monday, May 28th from a Broadway Petro Mart customer.

The customer filled their vehicle with gas, walked into the convenience store, and saw an unresponsive Rana on the ground.

Police say Rana was not transported to a medical facility, because he was already dead before emergency crews made it to the scene.

Police say Rana's death might be the result of an armed robbery, but say their investigation continues. There is no suspect in custody at this time.

Rana's family is offering a $3,000 cash reward for information leading to the arrest of a suspect. The family's spokesman Attorney Mike Maxwell tells FOX6 that Rana was a husband and father of four. "We would encourage anyone with information to contact the Waukesha Police Department at 262-524-3818," Maxwell said.

In a statement to FOX6 News Tuesday, Maxwell said Rana emigrated from Pakistan in 1999 and is survived by his wife and four children, along with two sisters and four brothers.

Rana and his wife have lived in Waukesha since he emigrated. His children include three daughters and a son - all adults. Rana has two daughters who graduated from UW-Madison and a son currently enrolled. One of Rana's daughters will begin medical school in the fall and his other daughter will start at UW-Milwaukee in the fall.

Friends of the Rana family are establishing a memorial fund to help the family cover expenses. Contributions to this fund can be made at any Landmark Credit Union branch.

FOX6 News spoke with Rana's neighbor, Jerry Stanke. Stanke has lived next door to Rana for about 12 years.

"Always friendly, always nice, helpful neighbor. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy. We shoveled snow together and collected leaves together in the fall. I can't say enough nice things about him," Stanke said.

Waukesha police say this is the first homicide in the city of Waukesha since 2010, and many in the area where shocked to hear what had happened.

"I think it's a real sad thing, because Waukesha is so quiet. For someone to come along and do something like that, it's scary. It's unbelievable," Chuck Troutman said.

Police say the Broadway Petro Mart was robbed earlier in May, but Rana was not working at the time of that incident.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the Waukesha police Department at (262) 524-3831.
