Milwaukee Art Museum hosting French posters exhibit

MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Art Museum is hosting an exhibit of 19th century French posters.

The more than 100 posters were designed by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Jules Chéret, Pierre Bonnard, Alphonse Mucha and others.

Exhibition curator Mary Weaver Chapin says the posters covered billboards, scaffolding, Morris columns, kiosks and shop windows throughout Paris in the late 1800s.

She says the works celebrated the dawn of new entertainment, new products and new technology.

"Posters of Paris: Toulouse-Lautrec and His Contemporaries" starts Friday, June 1st and runs through Sept. 9th.

The exhibition includes rare preparatory studies that show how artists developed their designs.
