Fire damages South Milwaukee home near 5th and Madison

SOUTH MILWAUKEE -- Fire crews responded to a house fire near 5th and Madison in South Milwaukee early Thursday morning, June 7th.

Authorities say five people were inside the house when the fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. -- three people upstairs and two downstairs. Officials say all five people made it out of the house safely.

Authorities say fire crews from Oak Creek and Franklin were called to the scene to assist in extinguishing the fire.

Officials say the cause of the fire is unknown, but crews say they believe the fire started on the porch and spread.

A neighbor recorded video of the fire on her cell phone.

"It was flaming pretty good when the officers got us out. Everybody got out safe. For us down on the lower I think it's more of smoke and water damage, but upstairs I think got pretty much totaled," Ricky Harshman, who was able to escape the fire safely, said Thursday.
