We Energies crew plugs natural gas leak on Mayfair Rd.

WAUWATOSA -- Construction crews struck a gas line while working on Mayfair Rd. around 9:30 a.m. Monday, June 25th. Just before 11 a.m., a We Energies crew on the scene had plugged the leak.

The road where the leak occurred was temporarily closed in both directions between North Ave. and Watertown Plank Rd. The Hwy. 45 northbound exit was also closed.

The construction crew pulled the service line from the gas main -- and that's from where the natural gas was leaking. The gas main itself was not broken.

Both the Valvoline Instant Oil Change and UFCW Local 1444 had to be evacuated while a We Energies crew worked the scene.

"It's under construction to begin with, so this is hard on the community and it's hard on people who work here. We want to open this up as soon as we can, but we have to make sure that the gas company and We Energies is confident that everything is under control before we do so," Wauwatosa Fire Chief Rob Ugaste said at the scene Monday.
