Deputy assaulted while breaking up fight at lakefront

MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County Sheriff's deputy who was breaking up a fight at McKinley Beach on the evening of Tuesday, July 3rd was himself assaulted in the process.

A 15-year-old boy attacked the deputy from behind, knocked him to the ground and then fled the scene.

Two deputies pursued the teen across Lincoln Memorial Drive, through a crowd of people, and caught him. He was taken to the Children’s Detention Center and booked on charges of Battery to a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting/Obstructing an Officer.

If convicted, he faces up to six years and nine months imprisonment.

The deputy who was assaulted suffered scrapes and abrasions. He was treated on the scene.

Thousands of people were at the lakefront to witness the U.S. Bank fireworks display.

Sheriff's officials say numerous fights and other disorderly behavior took place during the fireworks. Several individuals refused to stop fighting and did not comply with deputies’ orders. One person was tased.

About 100 juveniles were involved in the disturbances between the Northpoint parking lot and McKinley Marina.
