Golf fans take in first round of U.S. Women's Open in Kohler

KOHLER -- The U.S. Women's Open 2012 kicked off at Blackwolf Run Golf Course on Thursday, July 5th, amid record-setting heat and an excessive heat warning. Golf fans worked to strike a balance between watching some golf, and watching out for themselves.

Golf fans in Kohler Thursday said it was all about staying hydrated as they took in the first-round action at Blackwolf Run Golf Course for the U.S. Women's Open.

Billy McCorkle and his three daughters were among the spectators during Thursday's opening round. They chose a delicious method for beating the heat.

"We've had three ice creams each!" one of the girls said.

In the extreme heat, officials say extra measures had to be taken regarding provisions being offered to fans. Two air-conditioned charter buses served as cooling centers, and the USGA and Kohler offered fans two-for-one deals on bottled water. That deal will also be offered during the second round on Friday, July 6th.

Additionally, officials encourage fans to come prepared.

"It's par for the course to show up here at Blackwolf Run with sunscreen, a hat and most importantly, some water -- you gotta stay hydrated," Dan Hubbard, Assistant Director of Communications for the USGA said.
