1,200 barrels of crude oil spilled near Grand Marsh

GRAND MARSH (AP) -- Enbridge Energy Partners says one of its pipelines has leaked about 1,200 barrels of oil in Wisconsin.

The company said in a Saturday, July 28th statement that the leak happened Friday afternoon near Grand Marsh. It says it was alerted by a pressure drop in the line, which was immediately shut down. Crews were sent to the site of the leak.

Enbridge says the oil was contained in a field, mostly on the pipeline right-of-way. No one was hurt.

Enbridge says some of the oil spilled into a small pond, but is not affecting any streams or underground water supplies.

The company says the cause of the spill is still under investigation. They say it may take up to 30 days to clean the area.

The leak happened in a 24-inch pipeline that mainly carries light crude oil to Chicago area refineries.

Enbridge is a Canada-based energy company. They operate the world's largest crude oil and liquids pipeline systems in both Canada and the U.S.

The line that spilled is capable of carrying 318,000 barrels per day of light crude from Canada to Chicago-area refineries.

Enbridge said the pipeline had been inspected twice in the past five years.
