Funeral service held for Milwaukee County Deputy Sergio Aleman

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Law enforcement officers from around the state paid their respects to Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputy Sergio Aleman Tuesday, August 7th. Deputy Aleman was killed while on duty last week, following a crash on I-43.

Law enforcement officials joined family and friends at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Milwaukee where a funeral service was held for Deputy Aleman. The 49-year-old deputy died July 31st after his sheriff's truck hit the back of a flatbed tow truck on Interstate 43 near downtown Milwaukee, as he was responding to a call.

A procession of law enforcement officers accompanied Aleman's body from the church to St. Adalbert Cemetery.

A statement from Deputy Aleman's family says he was a loving husband, dedicated father and friend to many. Deputy Aleman had been with the sheriff's department for 18 years.

Deputy Aleman left behind his wife, and five children.

Some who attended Tuesday's services knew Deputy Aleman personally, and others professionally. Everyone had positive memories of their time with him.

Barb Wietczak was amongst hundreds who waited outside of St. Adalbert's Cemetery to honor Deputy Aleman's life and work.

"Very impressive, very reverent, very respectful," Wietczak said.

Doug Comerford did not know Deputy Aleman, but said he's grateful for the 18 years of decorated service Deputy Aleman provided.

"It's a sad day for law enforcement. These guys put their lives on the line every single day," Comerford said.

Flags were lowered to half-staff Tuesday in honor of Deputy Aleman.
