Mich. couple attempting swim across Lake Michigan

LUDINGTON, Mich. (AP) -- A Michigan couple swimming more than 50 miles across Lake Michigan to raise awareness about depression after childbirth are nearing the end of their journey.

Sara and Jeff Tow are swimming from Two Rivers, Wis., to Ludington, Mich. They left Tuesday morning, August 14th.

The Tows, who live in the Grand Rapids area, are trying to draw attention to postpartum depression, which affected both of them after having two children. Jeff Tow says a "significant statement'' sometimes is necessary to get noticed. The marathon swim is their statement.

They are assisted in a boat by Jim Dreyer, a swimmer who conquered Lake Michigan in 1998. Dreyer says lake conditions will play a big role.

The Tows children are now 11 and nine.
