Tammy Baldwin added to list of speakers for Dem. National Convention

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin has been added to the list of speakers for the Democratic National Convention next month in North Carolina.

In a statement, Baldwin's campaign told FOX6 News Wednesday, August 22nd:

“Tammy is excited to have an opportunity to speak at the convention and talk about the clear choice voters will face in November. Tammy will fight to do what's right for Wisconsin’s middle class and Tommy Thompson will put those at the very top and the powerful special interests in Washington ahead of Wisconsin. That is a clear choice and she looks forward to speaking about it at the convention.”

Baldwin was one of 10 women announced Wednesday as convention speakers. Others include the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.

The additions come as Democrats have increasingly blasted a Republican Senate candidate from Missouri who said victims of "legitimate rape'' are able to naturally prevent pregnancy.

Most Democrats and women's groups objected to Todd Akin's language because it suggested there are different severities of rape. The addition of so many women to the speakers list hints that Democrats will continue hammering the GOP over women's rights.

Baldwin is running against Republican Tommy Thompson for Wisconsin's open Senate seat.

FOX6's Mike Lowe will be reporting from both the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Stay tuned to FOX6 News for the latest!
