Woman critical after stabbing at downtown MATC campus

MILWAUKEE -- A woman in her 20s is in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck at the Milwaukee Area Technical College downtown campus around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 12th.

The stabbing occurred on the third floor of the main MATC building. Police say the incident involved the victim, a student, and another male who were in a relationship.

"Before I know it, I was going up the stairs, and a lot of police officers with their guns out came up the stairs, and asked me to move out of the way. They went up to the third floor," Christiana White said.

MATC Security and witnesses came to the woman's aid, and held the man who stabbed the woman multiple times in the neck. Police took the man into custody.

The victim was taken to Froedtert Hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Police say the stabbing is the result of domestic violence.

"This wasn't random. It wasn't like someone just came in here and wantonly started stabbing people. This was an ongoing relationship between the suspect and the victim," Lt. Ray Gibbs with the Milwaukee Police Department said.

Meanwhile, MATC's president says the situation did not put other students at risk.

"The students should be assured that this campus is safe and secure -- that this was an isolated incident between two students who knew each other, and our public safety team responded immediately to the situation," Dr. Michael Burke said.

Because this case involves a domestic situation, FOX6 News is not releasing the name of the victim.

Police say their investigation into this incident is ongoing.
