Sheboygan Falls teenagers may have been troubled

SHEBOYGAN FALLS -- They could face life in prison for a gruesome murder. Antonio Barbeau and Nathan Paape are accused of killing a 78-year-old woman. What's more shocking, they're both 13 years old.

"Not sleeping just thinking about it, it's just horrible," said Kristen Scarpaci, who is Paape's neighbor. "Not knowing anything my heart sunk I felt bad for his mother."

While her children play in front of her house, Scarpaci is keeping an even closer eye on her children.

"Quiet, during the summer I'd see him on his bike with other kids," is how Scarpaci described Paape. But she says, the 13-year-old was disrespectful at times.

"A finger here or this or that a gesture," said Scarpaci.

Her daughter also attended school with Antonio Barbeau. The 13-year-old was a runaway juvenile who was friends with her daughter in elementary school.

"He was in a car accident in fifth grade I think it was pretty bad, nothing seemed right after that," said Scarpaci. She said the two friends may have been closed off at times.

"Nothing that would lead me to believe that something horrible would happen," she added.

But the criminal complaint says on Monday, the two intended to rob and kill Barbara Olson.

"Struck her twice with a hammer that he had brought and then Mister Barbeau struck her with the blade end of the hatchet with such force it stuck her in the skull it required two of them to pull it out," said Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco.

The complaint also says the boys were unable to load Olson's body into the trunk of her car, so they left her in the garage and stole her car. They then allegedly drove to a bowling alley and got pizza.

"I don't understand it," said Scarpaci. "It's scary, it's sickening, it's all of those all in one."

What drove them to allegedly commit these crimes is unknown. And while Scarpaci is letting this all sink in, two 13-year-olds will be tried as adults for murder.

Barbeau has a juvenile record, but the details could not be released due to his age. Paape had no criminal history prior to this week's arrest.
