OCONOMOWOC -- The Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital is opening its doors this weekend to teach the public how to properly care for a horse during the "Festival of the Horse."

"I think a lot of people are very surprised that old adage: 'if they break their leg, shoot them' doesn't apply anymore. We can do a lot of different things for horses," Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Chuck Johnson said.

During "Festival of the Horse" people can see the advanced technology used to diagnose injured horses such as x-ray and MRI technology and ultrasound equipment. Visitors can also learn about surgeries performed on horses.

"We will have our surgery suite open for tours. On display we will have some of the things we have removed from horses over the years," Veterinary Technician Sally Schwartz said.

Doctors at the center say even horses have to get their teeth cleaned!

"Horses get cavities just like humans. They get tartar build-up, periodontal or gum disease that needs to be taken care of," Dr. Andy Schmidt with the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital said.

At this weekend's festival, visitors will also have riding demonstrations and feature riders in their traditional competitive attire.

"The horse is just an incredible animal and we want to share it with the whole community," Dr. Bob Magnus with the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital said.

"Festival of the Horse" will take place at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic and Hospital in Oconomowoc from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. Saturday, October 20th and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21st. The event is free and open to the public.
