Family describes young girls killed in Racine fire as fun-loving

RACINE -- Balloons and cards now decorate a boarded-up house on Linden Ave. in Racine. That's the scene of a house fire that killed nine-year-old Dayja Scott and her eight-year-old sister, Dalija early Thursday, November 8th.

For family and friends, it is difficult to think that the two young girls are gone. Their brothers, five-year-old Luther and seven-year-old Michael are hospitalized.

"They are not in good condition. Condition not good. Just hoping both of them pull through. It's not a good situation for either one," William Scott, the uncle of the children said.

An aunt of the children took video featuring the girls over the weekend.

"They were loving children. They were fun to be around. I still can't believe they're gone. They were good kids. They had their whole life. I know Dayja wanted to go to college. She said 'I want to visit you guys at college. I want to go there too.' It's traumatizing that she's gone," Dequita Tate, the aunt of the children said.

According to family members, the mother of the children, Deborah Scott, was working hard for the children she loved. They say she just got a job as a housekeeper at a local hotel. They also say she had just paid the utility company to turn the electricity on.

One of the girls had looked forward to a school field trip Thursday. That field trip was cancelled following news of the tragic fire.

A Racine-area funeral home is donating funerals for the two girls.
