Wind Lake family heads to NJ to distribute donations to Sandy victims

WIND LAKE -- A Wind Lake family is heading to the East Coast to get a large amount of donations to victims of Superstorm Sandy. This, as gas rationing continues in New York and some remain without power along the East Coast, three weeks after the storm struck.

The Bowen family is collecting donations and stuffing a trailer donated by Tom's Trailers.

"We're doing this because we want to, not because we have to, not because somebody's paying us and not because somebody told us we have to. We believe in the law of attraction. If you put it out there, it's gonna come back to you," Bruce Bowen said.

Bruce and his nephew loaded up a trailer Tuesday, November 21st as they prepared to leave for Toms River, New Jersey on Thanksgiving Day.

Bruce said he's been overwhelmed by the response, adding the effort has exposed him to the best the people of southeast Wisconsin have to offer.

"We said 'oh man, I think the trailer's too big!' And if you look at the trailer now, we're not sure if it's big enough, so it's pretty awesome. I don't think it gets any better. It just reinforces that positive people are out there. There's good people out there," Bowen said.

Bowen said after spending much of last weekend sifting through the donations, they were getting a bit overwhelmed. That's when one family member found a group of coins in one of the donated boxes that read: "Volunteers have hearts of gold, helping people young and old." The family took this discovery as a sign and encouragement to work harder to help.
