Woman crochets scarves for kids in need with one hand

BROWN DEER -- It's been more than 20 years since Dottie Fuzer took up crocheting. Although many people struggle learning this craft with two hands, Dottie had to learn how to crochet with only one hand!

"Everyone told me 'you can`t do it,' but I proved to them I can," Dottie said.

Dottie was diagnosed with Polio when she was only two-years-old. The disease paralyzed most of her right side.

That means, she had to learn how to crochet with her left hand, only using her right hand to hold the needle.

Now, Dottie is such a natural she doesn't even need to look down.

"I even fall asleep doing it, but never missed a stitch," Dottie said.

Since Dottie started crocheting scarves four years ago, she has never kept them for herself.

"Each stitch is made with love and my mom used to say 'it`s better to give than to receive,'" Dottie said.

Dottie began donating her scarves to an area charity, but once it closed she decided to start donating them to Condella's Coats for Kids.

Dottie's daughter recently dropped off 166 scarves to FOX6 News.

"'I thought, well Vince might like them, and that`s when I remembered him with the coats," Dottie said.

Dottie spends the entire year building her collection of scarves, so when winter rolls around she can keep area children in need warm.

"I`m contributing something to the community. I am very happy and I enjoy doing it," Dottie said.
