Darien man claims $1 million prize in Powerball

MADISON — A Darien man has claimed his $1 million Powerball prize at Wisconsin Lottery headquarters. This, as the Powerball jackpot rose to $500 million for Wednesday's drawing (on November 28th). That number could get bigger as more people buy tickets.

Roger Cobb's ticket was purchased at the Delavan Mobil Mart. His ticket matched all five regular winning numbers. The winning numbers were: 22, 32, 37, 44, 50 with a Powerball of 34.

Cobb's $1 million prize is a single cash payment of $672,500 after taxes.

Lottery officials say Cobb does not want to discuss his win and has declined taking part in a winner’s news conference.

The Delavan Mobil Mart that sold Cobb the winning ticket earns a commission of $20,000.

Cobb's ticket is the seventh big winning Powerball ticket sold in Wisconsin in 2012.

The Delavan Mobil Mart said 95% of its sales Tuesday alone were Powerball tickets. Some are considering the store lucky after the $1 million ticket was sold there Saturday. On Tuesday, the store gave away some Powerball tickets, as a means of saying 'thank you' for earning the $20,000 prize.

Both avid and casual lottery players stopped by the Delavan Mobil Mart on Tuesday, hoping to become Wisconsin's next millionaire. Six correct numbers in Wednesday's drawing's leads to a half billion dollars!

Terri Cooper recently moved to Wisconsin from Colorado. She said she hopes her $2 Powerball ticket will change her luck.

"Came here for a fresh start and figured Powerball is a good way to start over. Haven't had the best of luck the last couple of years, lost my mom, lost my job, lost pretty much everything. If I win that jackpot, that pretty much fixes everything," Cooper said.

Jerry Becker from Illinois was passing through town on business, and couldn't resist making a pit stop for a Powerball ticket.

"I bought the Powerball. Figure if I didn't buy one, my wife would be unhappy. And that is the winning Powerball!" Becker said.

Many were feeling optimistic about the possibility of winning the biggest jackpot in Powerball history, and dreaming of what they'd do with the money.

Wednesday's Powerball drawing will take place at 9:59 p.m. Ticket sales end at 9:00 p.m.
