Man charged after posing as pro baseball player returns to court

MILWAUKEE — 28-year-old Montaous Walton, the Milwaukee man facing two charges of theft by fraud for allegedly posing as a professional baseball player to two different sports agents, returns to court Monday, December 3rd.

The criminal complaint against Walton indicates he approached two different sports agents about representing him; once in August 2011 and again in June 2012. In each instance, Walton indicated he was a 24-year-old professional baseball player that had signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays of the American League.

In the first instance, a California sports agent provided Walton with cash, goods and services totaling more than $4,500. When the agent eventually found out Walton was not a baseball player, he confronted him and Walton admitted he did not have a contract with the Blue Jays.

The complaint indicates the second instance of this alleged fraud took place starting June 2, 2012. Walton apparently approached a sports agent in Ontario, Canada. That agent provided Walton with more than $1,200 in cash, goods and services — again under the assumption that Walton had a contract with the Blue Jays. The agent later learned this was not true. The complaint says Walton apologized to the agent for his actions.

If convicted, Walton could face up to three-and-a-half years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
