Deputy's squad struck by suspected drunk driver on I-43

Squad DamageMILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee County Sheriff’s deputy was on a traffic stop inside his squad with his emergency lights activated on I-43 northbound at Locust Street shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, December 29th when his squad was rammed from behind by a suspected drunken driver.

The force of the impact pushed the trunk of the squad into the backseat, and trapped the injured deputy inside. The squad was also pushed into the vehicle that was pulled over for the traffic stop, but no injuries were sustained by the driver of that car.

The Milwaukee Fire Department removed the deputy from the squad and, due to head, neck, back and shoulder pain, placed him on a backboard for transport to the hospital.

22-year-old Roberto Maldonado of Milwaukee was arrested for OWI-1st –Causing Injury.

Maldanado was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was not injured. A blood draw was taken.

Maldanado faces up to one year imprisonment if convicted.
