PASADENA, Calif. -- The University of Wisconsin Marching Band kicked off the new year by bringing smiles to the crowds of people gathered for the 2013 Rose Parade in southern California.

Tuesday's performance is the band's third in three years -- because the Badgers have made it to the Rose Bowl that many times in a row.

According the UW Marching Band entry on Wikipedia, the band was created in 1885 as the Wisconsin Regimental Band. The first band consisted of 11 members, with two or three more joining before the year ended. It was not until 1894 that the 26 members of the University Band began playing at football games.
