Suspect shot by off-duty MPD detective during robbery attempt

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police say an armed suspect was shot by an off-duty Milwaukee police detective during a robbery attempt on the city's north side on Sunday evening, January 6th.

Police say the detective was in the 4500 block of N. 27th Street shortly before 6:00 p.m. when he was approached by a suspect who was armed with a handgun. 

Police say the suspect demanded valuables from the detective and during the robbery, the detective produced a firearm and discharged it -- striking the armed suspect. The suspect then fled the scene.

A short time later the suspect walked into a grocery store in the 2600 block of W. Atkinson and asked that medical attention be called.  The suspect was conveyed to the hospital for treatment for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect has identified himself as a 17-year-old Milwaukee resident to investigators. 

The detective was not injured.  He is a 53-years-old with nearly 23 years of service.  He is assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau. 

As is standard operating procedure, the incident is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.  

The detective was placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office will make the final determination in the incident.
