Joshua Gray charged in connection with man's drug overdose death

MILWAUKEE -- Joshua Gray of Milwaukee has been charged with first degree reckless homicide in the death of Riley Knapp. The criminal complaint in the case indicates Gray supplied heroin to Knapp, and Knapp died of an apparent overdose.

The criminal complaint in the case indicates Knapp was found dead in the basement of a home on Chestnut Lane in the Village of Grafton on January 3rd.

When officials investigated, they discovered a hypodermic needle on a dresser, along with a tourniquet, and a baggie of heroin. Officials also discovered additional drug paraphernalia, including several prescription bottles, marijuana and a number of hypodermic needles -- according to the criminal complaint.

Officials also came upon a cell phone with text messages indicating Knapp was seeking out drugs -- presumably heroin.

Grafton police officers and the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Drug Task Force zeroed in on Gray -- arresting him the next day.

"Under these circumstances you have to move appropriately with all due pace so that individual doesn't get tipped off and we can further the investigation successfully, It's essential that we not only deal with the issue at hand, but that we deal with these narcotics traffickers," Grafton Police Chief Charles Wenten said.

When interviewed by police, Gray admitted he had sold heroin to Knapp four or five times over the past month -- and had sold heroin to Knapp recently -- a $100 bag and a $50 bag.

The Medical Examiner determined Knapp's cause of death to be a drug overdose.

If convicted, Gray faces fines of up to $100,000 and up to 40 years in prison, or both.

Gray is currently in custody at the Ozaukee County Jail on $75,000.00 bail.
