MILWAUKEE -- The 17-year-old suspect shot by an off-duty Milwaukee police detective during a robbery attempt on the city’s north side on Sunday evening, January 6th remains hospitalized and is in stable condition.

The suspect, who has an arrest record with the Milwaukee Police Department dating back to 2008, will be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office in the coming days for charging.

Police say the detective was in the 4500 block of N. 27th Street shortly before 6:00 p.m. when he was approached by the suspect who was armed with a handgun.

Police say the suspect demanded valuables from the detective and during the robbery, the detective produced a firearm and discharged it — striking the armed suspect. The suspect then fled the scene.

A short time later the suspect walked into a grocery store in the 2600 block of W. Atkinson and asked that medical attention be called.  The suspect was conveyed to the hospital for treatment.

Miguel Alsuwailih was working behind the cash register on Sunday night when the suspect ran into the store.

"He just walks right in like he was in a hurry, by himself. He's got his hand over his stomach. He's like 'Miguel, help me. I'm shot,' and I'm thinking it's a joke because I don't see no blood, and he's walking over to me saying 'Miguel, I need to talk to you. I'm shot,' and he lifts up his shirt and there's two bullet holes. I'm like, 'I'm going to call 911,' and he says 'don't call police. I need a doctor but no police.' I'm trying to restrain him because now he's trying to run. He said 'I'm going to jail.' I said 'man, you're going to die. Don't worry about jail now!'" Alsuwailih said.

Alsuwailih says this incident was the second time in the past week someone with a gunshot wound has run into the store for help.

The detective in this case has been placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.
