31-year-old Greendale woman charged in death of pedestrian

GREENDALE -- 31-year-old Josephine Sardina of Greendale has been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle (detectable amount of controlled substance) in connection with an incident in which Sardina allegedly struck a pedestrian back in October.

The criminal complaint in this case indicates Sardina struck a pedestrian on Loomis Rd. just south of Layton Ave.

When interviewed by police, Sardina admitted to striking the pedestrian -- identified as David Budge. Sardina told officials she was getting ready to turn into a gas station when she saw Budge, hit him "and that was it." 

The criminal complaint in the case indicates Sardina admitted to officials she smokes marijuana due to back pain, and lab results indicated there was marijuana in Sardina's system at the time of the incident.

The criminal complaint also indicates Sardina had received a text message at 2:58 p.m. and read it at approximately 3:00 p.m. 911 was called after the crash at 3:02 p.m.

A Medical Examiner's report indicated Budge's cause of death was blunt force trauma as a result of injuries to the right side of his body including his right arm, multiple rib fractures, a shattered pelvis, lacerated liver and fractures to his right leg.

If convicted, Sardina faces a maximum of $100,000 in fines, a maximum of 25 years in prison or both.
