Diver dies after possible equipment failure in Nagawicka Lake

DELAFIELD (WITI) -- A 32-year-old scuba diver dies Saturday, Jan. 19 after a possible equipment malfunction in Nagawicka Lake.

A group of six divers were out diving under the ice this morning.

They said when they returned to land, they noticed that one of the divers, Steven LaLonde, was missing.

"He was an accomplished diver,  we do know that he had a lot of experience.  The divers that were here all know each other," said city of Delafield Lieutenant Robert Hagan.

The group said they managed to find LaLonde and pulled him out of the water.

"Apparently he had become disconnected from the ropes and I don't know how long they had looked for him," said Lake Country Fire Chief Jack Edwards.

Police said the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition... he later died.

According to a press release from the Delafield police department, equipment failure was likely the cause of the incident that led to LaLonde's death.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
