Firefighters battle two-alarm house fire near 29th & Grant

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee firefighters battled a two-alarm house fire near 29th and Grant on the city's south side early Sunday morning that left a family homeless.

A neighbor caught dramatic video of the two-alarm fire.

"There were flames coming out of the window almost hitting the home next door. That's how intense it was," Van DeBauche said.

Officials say the fire appears to have started in the basement of the building and then spread to the ground and second floors.

While crews were fighting the fire, the second floor of the house collapsed, trapping an officer who was working nearby. Crews were able to get him to safety.

It took firefighters about an hour-and-a-half to bring the fire under control. The home is a total loss.

It was an emotional Sunday morning for Sarina Roman and her family. While on a trip to Chicago, they received a devastating phone call.

"They called and said our house was on fire, so we got back on the freeway and came home and our house is gone. It's sad because just the other day we gathered clothes for another family who's house burned down and didn't have clothes and now we come home and we don't have anything," Roman said.

Roman's mother is a single parent of six. Roman says the family is thankful everyone is safe.

"I just have to stay positive for my little brother and sister and for my son. Those are material things. At least I got my family and we have to stay together and stay strong for one another and we`ll be fine," Roman said.
