Racine County crews prepare to plow first snow of the season

RACINE (WITI) -- Crews with the Racine Dept. of Public Work are prepared to plow their first snow of the season on Wednesday, January 30th. Up until now, those same crews have only had to salt the roadways this winter.

Racine has five-yard dump trucks that spread salt and plow if needed. So with one to three inches forecast for the Racine area on Wednesday morning, those trucks might actually get a workout. Drivers, however, aren't expecting much based on the winter so far.

"We would normally expect to see a lot of plowing going on during regular business hours. That isn't taking place," said Public Workers Commissioner Mark Yehlen. "So as a result, those guys are out working in the streets and they're filling in the potholes. They may be working on the storm water system and sanitary sewer system."

Yehlen says for the city, the lack of snow means savings.

"We save a lot of money on overtime and we also save money on salt," said Yehlen.
