Milwaukee poet killed in fatal shooting near 35th and Highland

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that happened early Sunday morning, January 27th near 35th and Highland, and say the incident was a result of domestic violence.

Police say 27-year-old Anita Brooks was shot and killed in an apartment around 1:00 a.m.

A 28-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested for the incident. Charges have been referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.

The man's name has not yet been released.

At Nostalgia Hall on Tuesday night, friends remembered Brooks -- a poetry performer at the establishment. There, she was known as Anita Bee.

All the money raised on Tuesday night was set to benefit Brooks' family.

"She wasn't just a good poet, she was a great mother, a great woman. Very humble and very soft-spoken. What she meant she said when she meant it, and she meant something in this world," friend and fellow poet Kwabena Antoine Nixon said.

Brooks has a three year-old daughter who will now be cared for by her aunts and uncles.

"It's hard but I learned from my big sister to be positive.  You know, everyone has stones thrown at some point.  But you know, when you get lemons, you make lemon juice.  Just stay positive," said Victoria Burgos, the victim's younger sister.
