Witness who helped pull woman from fiery crash describes chaotic scene

GLENDALE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police have now identified the victim in a fiery, fatal crash  that occurred near Green Bay and Custer on Monday, January 28th. The victim is 57-year-old Corinne Strahl.

Officials say Strahl was driving her car northbound on Green Bay in the lane adjacent to the curb when it struck a legally parked UPS delivery truck.

The UPS driver was out of the truck making a delivery. He and a witness pulled Strahl from the burning car. But she died at the scene.

Witnesses say Strahl may have been going as fast as 60 miles an hour. No one heard Strahl apply the brakes before the crash.

Kevin Eggert is a North Shore firefighter and trained EMT. On Monday afternoon, he was doing his other job -- picking up his daughter from Eastbrook Academy on Green Bay Road. However, Eggert soon had to put his professional training to use.

When Eggert heard the crash, he ran to help.

"That 's when I saw a woman slumped over the center console and asked the UPS driver for some help to open the door and pulled her off and tried moving her to the sidewalk," Eggert said.

Eggert performed CPR but he says Strahl never responded.

The crash left many witnesses in shock.

"Especially the high school students were very traumatized. There were a lot of tears in the lobby," one witness said.

In addition to seeing the tragedy life can bring, those students also saw witnesses push fear aside and rush to try to help.

"God wants us to look after each other and treat other people like we want to be treated. I'd want somebody to help me and that's why I wanted to help her," Eggert said.
