Winter weather causes morning traffic accidents, delays

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Monday morning's snow caused a very slow, sloppy commute for drivers.  The snow fell during the worst time - rush hour.

"It was about 20 miles slower than what it normally is," said driver Sherry Bloom.

By mid-morning, the slick commute had already resulted in 13 accidents and 16 disabled vehicles on the Milwaukee County Freeway System.

Just before 5 a.m., a crash involving a Sheriff's deputy took place on I-43 near Holt Ave.  The deputy was responding to an accident, when another vehicle spun out and struck the squad.  Fortunately, the deputy was not in the squad and no one was injured.

Around 7 a.m. on I-43 near Capitol Drive, a vehicle spun out in the middle of the highway, striking several cars.  It took about an hour to clear the crash.

Morning travel times to downtown Milwaukee doubled.  Traffic tie-ups were even felt farther south in Oak Creek.

"Coming in here, there's quite a backup, so i don't know if I'm going to make my last bus or not," said driver Teri Olsen.

The Milwaukee County Transit System also reported delays in bus service because of the snow.  But for some drivers, it proved to be the best option to avoid the headaches on the roads.

"That's why I use public transportation instead, so I don't have to deal with this," said driver Hang Nguyen.

"Just take your time.  We've all lived here how long and dealt with this?  So take your time," said Olsen.
