Racine buys former Racine Steel Castings site for $1

RACINE (WITI) -- The city of Racine Redevelopment Authority (RDA) purchased the former Racine Steel Castings site for a purchase price of $1. The purchase was finalized on January 15th after some six years of negotiations.

In 2009, as part of the redevelopment effort for the property, the Racine Common Council approved purchasing the property for $316,000 from construction and demolition contractor E.G. Development, LLC/Dominic Gorniak.  However, Gorniak failed to comply with the conditions of the purchase agreement.  Eventually, Gorniak abandoned the property which lead to squatters, vandalism and gang activity at the property.

Racine Mayor John Dickert stated in a news release issued on Tuesday, February 5th that he is excited about the next phase of this property’s role in the community.

The RDA is calling for the property to be made suitable for light manufacturing uses. The ten-acre property borders a rail line and has access to municipal water.
