Racine officer hurt after squad is struck, ends up in ditch

RACINE CO. (WITI) -- An officer with the Racine Police Department was hurt after his squad ended up in a ditch on I-94 near Seven Mile Rd. The resulting crash temporarily shut down a lane on the interstate around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5th.

Officials with the Wisconsin State Patrol say the wreck happened in the southbound lanes of I-94 near Caledonia. They say Officer Timothy Waystedt's squad was struck by two tractor trailers. Neither of them stopped after the squad crashed.

Officer Waystedt was taken to St. Mary's Hospital with minor injuries to his back and face from airbag deployment.

Officer Waystedt is an 18-year veteran of the Racine Police Department and a K-9 handler. Officer Waystedt's partner, K-9 Marco, was not in the squad at the time of the accident.
