Group speaks with Waukesha students on dangers of drug/alcohol abuse

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- Four speakers, two who are recovering from addiction spoke with students at Waukesha South High School on Wednesday, February 20th -- and their message grabbed the attention of the students in the audience.

Bryan Roe lead the assembly at Waukesha South High School. He is part of the group "Your Choice To Live." He and his team speak to freshman and sophomores about how decisions made when young can have far-reaching implications in life.

"We feel as an organization, we have an obligation to do everything we can to tell them the truth," Roe said.

Tyler Lybert is a recovering addict who started using drugs in sixth grade, who reached rock bottom at age 21.

"When you start using drugs and alcohol you stop growing mentally, so I was an 11-year-old kid trapped in a 21-year-old body," Lybert said.

Lybert's sister, Ashley Nowakowski took a different path, free of drugs and alcohol and spoke about how Lybert's drug use nearly tore her family apart.

The group emphasized how peer pressure and fitting in cannot compromise your morals.

"They walk out realizing the power of their decisions and there are no small choices. If we could just help one person in the crowd that's enough for me to sleep at night," Roe said.
