Officer-involved shooting investigated on Milwaukee's north side



MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at a home near 45th and Villard on the city's north side. It happened shortly after noon on Thursday, February 21st.

Officers were called to a home in the neighborhood for a report of domestic violence with shots having been fired. When they arrived, two police sergeants found a man holding a gun inside a home threatening to kill his girlfriend, children and other family members.

While the sergeants were attempting to negotiate with the suspect, he fired the weapon striking his girlfriend and wounding her. One of the sergeants then fired his service weapon at the suspect, wounding him.



The 44-year-old girlfriend was taken to a hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.

A 65-year-old member of the suspect's family suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound during the incident. He was taken to a hospital and treated.

The 43-year-old suspect was taken to a hospital for life-threatening injuries. Police say he has an arrest record with the Milwaukee Police Department.

The 45-year-old sergeant who shot the suspect is an 18-year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department. He will be placed on administrative duty pending the completion of the investigation.

Chief Flynn was at the scene, as was Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm. Flynn praised his officers for their actions at the scene.

"It's clear to us the quick and timely response of our officers absolutely prevented a mass murder," Chief Flynn said.

The incident is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.
