Changes likely for Green Bay Packers defensive unit this season

GREEN BAY (WITI) -- If you are only as good as your last game, the Green Bay Packers defense can't feel very good. That unit won't be able to alter any impressions of its playoff drubbing by the Niners until next fall.

"The last game in San Francisco was really a disgraceful performance -- and I thought it was a shocking performance, because they are a much better defense than that. A lot of teams can't contain Colin Kaepernick, but what a lot of teams do is they can force some negative plays on him, and boy, Green Bay was really bad all around defensively against Kaepernick," Sports Illustrated NFL writer Peter King said.

King is not alone in dissecting what he says is disgraceful. The assembled NFL media at an event like the scouting combine is all about projection based on evaluation. The teams are the same way. The Packers brain trust -- no exception.

Translation: expect some changes for next year's defensive unit. The coaching staff appears intact, but its approach figures to be different. It would not be surprising to see Ted Thompson draft multiple players on that side of the ball again this April.

"The Baltimore Ravens, world champions, they would like to hold all that together and keep it and go forward like the 29 and 30 Yankess or whatever it was. You can't do that in the NFL anymore. The NFL is always evolving,"

The Packers will have to adapt -- particularly on defense. If they are healthy and starting, Green Bay could face Michael Vick and Robert Griffin III in the upcoming regular season -- and Kaepernick is on the schedule too.
