Butcher shops sell hundreds of pounds of corned beef

GREENFIELD (WITI) -- With St. Patrick's Day on the horizon, there's greater than usual demand for an Irish treat -- corned beef.

Ray's Butcher Shoppe in Greenfield was nearly sold out on Friday, March 15th after selling 1,500+ pounds of corned beef. All that's left -- except for those who special ordered -- is a few rounds. Ray's co-owner Perry Podd says those will not be around for long.

"That's pretty much how it goes, every Saint Patrick's Day," said Podd.

At Bunzel's Old-Fashioned Meat Market in Milwaukee, there was ample supply on Friday. Jeff Zupan explains Bunzel's began bringing in about 4,000 pounds of corned beef back in January to prepare for both St. Patrick's Day and the shop's monthly meal deal.

Zupan says in just a few hours on Friday, customers bought about 450 pounds of Bunzel's corned beef.

"People are coming in, saying, 'I wasn't able to get it,' or 'Okay, I'll take that one, and can I have one more, like it?'" said Zupan.
